 During the action to hold the right flank of the Abbey and prevent the encirclement of Sub-Section A that was in the process of performing a close assault of the objective, Sub-Section B was engaged by a reinforced section of enemy infantry and a fierce skirmish ensued. During this skirmish Sub-Section B suffered massive casualties and in a short period of time was reduced to half strength and losing many of its NCOs as well as the sections primary support weapon team. Pte. T. Fisher was instrumental in holding the left flank of Sub-Section B as one of only two riflemen remaining on the left flank of Sub-Section B facing a continuously reinforcing enemy section. During the combat Pte. T. Fisher took control of the sections’ bren that had already changed hands three times in quick succession as accurate enemy fire quickly killed anyone using it. Using the Bren, Pte. T. Fisher was able to maintain the flank, suppressing the enemy and giving the impression of vastly stronger forces in the defence then was actually present and this prevented an enemy attack that may have encircled the allied forces in the process of securing the Abbey.
