 LCpl. N. Ramsey: Operation Varsity II - No.6 Section launched a recovery patrol out 300 meters from friendly lines, with the intent of rescuing wounded and recovering dead paratroopers, who had been ambushed and killed, earlier. This patrol included No.6 Section Commander, No.5 Platoon Sergeant, and two Riflemen. Unfortunately, the patrol was caught out in transit, by 1x Stug III, and approximately 2-3 Sections EN infantry. LCpl Ramsey, in covering position with the Section’s Bren, reacted quickly and calmly and directed overwhelming fire onto the EN, not just suppressing, but eliminating all the enemies within moments.
As a result of his strong and confident leadership, the patrol was able to both complete their tasking and retrograde back to friendly lines with the casualties they sustained in the ambush. If he had not reacted as quickly as he did, his Section Commander, Platoon Sergeant, and Section mates would have certainly been killed.
