 Under the command of Sub Section A leader Acting Sergeant F. Marshall, a substantial portion of their element was wiped out or separated. This left A/Sgt. F. Marshall, Pte. D. Anzio, Pte. D. Feng, and A/LCpl. J Sledge as the last members of Subsection A within the abbey. Shortly thereafter A/LCpl. J Sledge was further isolated into the right most building on the rear of the abbey due to heavy small arms fire from an MG34, Rifles, and grenades. From this point onward A/LCpl J. Sledge returned fire preventing roughly half a german section from flanking the right flank of the abbey, his rifle fire injuring at least one. Shifting to the left of the building A/LCpl J. Sledge fired numerous rifle grenades at the center and leftern building injuring or killing at least three germans. A few moments later a German from the previous group pushed towards the Church itself, Sledge engaged, killing him in two accurate rifle shots. As the Germans continued to approach A/LCpl J. Sledge held them back with more rifle fire and the use of No. 36 hand grenades quickly thinning their numbers from roughly a full section to well under half strength. During the firefight Sledge was forced to constantly reposition from room to room as grenades were thrown from the surrounding buildings. Eventually with the support from Subsection B and No.2 Section A/LCpl J. Sledge was eventually able to withdraw from the building and regroup with No.1 Section.
