 For Actions in the Claymore Campaign, 04MAR21. Under the general command of LCpl. M. Shardonia, the small patrol set out to gain intelligence upon the enemy. Unfortunately this patrol was spotted by the enemy and engaged. Pte. E. Ball was quick to draw his weapon and knock out the enemy MG that was about to wipe out the patrol. During retrograde, Pte. D. Ryland was killed and the patrol leader, LCpl. M. Shardonia, was knocked unconscious by fire. Pte. E. Ball quicked dispatched two of the assailants and whilst under fire from a third, made the decision to pick up the Lance Corporal and retrograde. Pte. E. Ball and his unconscious patrol leader made it safely back to their section and proceeded to retrograde back to the O.R.V.
While collecting the rest of their equipment at the O.R.V. the section was ambushed by pursuing Germans. During the escape, both the section commander and two Lance Corporals were killed. In order to divert German fire away from the remainder of the fleeing troops, Pte. E. Ball laid down rapid fire on enemy positions. Pte. E. Ball managed to kill three pursuers before being able to escape himself and regroup with his depleted sections.
